Abstract
Although several methods are known to prevent isoimmune hemolytic disease of newborn(HDN), there is no standardized method. Since plasma exchange was introduced at first by Bowman in 1968, currently more developed methods such as cell seperators
is
used. In spite of many benefits, this method has limitation because of many complications of replacement fluids, such as transfusion mediated infections, urticaria, anaphylactic reaction and anticoagulant induced hypocalcemia. etc. . To avoid
these
side
effects, selective plasma exchange using EVAL (ethylene vinyl alcohol) filter was introduced. This new method does not need to replace with fluids, because most of treated plasma is returned to patient after removal of unwanted immunoglobulins.
There
are no reports concerning the utilization of selective plasma exchange to prevent HDN in Korea. Here we report a case of successful prevention of Rh-HDN in Rho(D) isoimmunized woman by use of selective plasma exchange(Korean J Clin Pathol
1995;15(4):669~76).
